It's much more woman-centric (even more so than Tombs of Atuan), slow, atmospheric, and meditative. However the final conflict and resolution in the last 5% of the book is just jarring and getting dark real fast.

They realize that Hare and many others are under the malign influence of a powerful wizard, who is promising life after death.
