I then switched to a 1/2" drill bit in the tailstock chuck and started enlarging the hole. I was periodically oiling the steady rest (bronze contact points) as I drilled. I was pulling out the bit every 1/8 to 1/4" to clear chips and was using a light oil on the bit.

If you cut off the tang, and drill a hole slightly bigger than the tailstock leadscrew diameter, the extraction can be restricted to the last 1/4" of the quill travel, and you gain an inch, which on a tiny lathe is a lot.
