The carbonation test is essentially a pH test indicating the depth of pH reducing effects of carbonation into the concrete member. The test is performed by simply spraying the phenolphthalein solution onto a freshly fractured surface. Webestablished, then a simple method to test this is to treat the concrete with phenolphtha-lein. Phenolphthalein comes in powder form, and will need to be dissolved in alco-hol for use in this test. In order to undertake the test, a section of concrete should be broken away and the fresh surface sprayed with the solution.
